How Do You Plan a Realistic Budget for an Indie Game?

One challenge in game development is estimating how much time and money a project will actually need. A simple concept can become much more complex when features like multiplayer, advanced graphics, different platforms, and ongoing updates are added.

I think starting with a minimum viable version is a practical approach. It allows developers to focus on the main gameplay, test the idea with real users, and understand which features deserve more investment.

Planning for testing, bug fixing, and post-launch maintenance is also important because development doesn't always end when the game is released.

For those who have worked on game projects, how do you estimate your initial budget? Do you plan everything upfront or develop a small prototype before deciding on the full scope?
